At the end of October, Associate Professor Khlood F. Salman, Dr.PH, MSN, BSN, RN, FAAN, was inducted into the 2020 American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Class of Fellows. One of the highest honors in the nursing profession, an AAN Fellowship recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of nursing leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research.
“I am honored to be selected as a Fellow,” said Dr. Salman. “This will provide a great opportunity to engage with prominent nursing leaders who have made a significant impact on the transformation of the health care system and have advanced the nursing profession at the national and international levels.”
Induction into the academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career. Less than 1% of nurses are selected as Fellows, which is the American Academy of Nursing’s highest honor.
Dr. Salman joined the School of Nursing faculty in 2007 and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship in 2016 to research the impact of culture and religion on breast cancer prevention among Muslim women in Saudi Arabia.
“Dr. Salman is a strong advocate for breast cancer prevention for Arab Muslim woman, a champion for refugee health, and a community public health leader. She has led a Christian Muslim dialogue in the Pittsburgh community,” said School of Nursing Dean Dr. Mary Ellen Glasgow. “Her work is impactful, unifying and essential in our society. We are very proud to have Dr. Salman as a faculty member.”
Her expertise in nursing, public/community health and Middle Eastern culture has directed her research to focus on disease prevention and health promotion with a particular interest in women’s health and vulnerable populations. Her funded research has included minority, immigrant and refugee populations; international/global health; environmental health; interreligious (interfaith) dialogue and technology in education.
Dr. Salman joins eight of her Duquesne nursing colleagues who already hold the distinction as American Academy of Nursing Fellows among their professional credentials. The high portion of nursing faculty who have earned this honor shows that Duquesne’s nursing faculty are highly regarded for leadership and scholarly accomplishments by their peers.
